This week I have been experimenting with Coptic binding. This method was employed by the early Christians in Egypt (the Copts) t produce the first true codices. It involves gathering several signatures and binding them together, and to the covers, with a decorative chain stitch across the spine, which is usually left exposed. The result is a book that will lie flat when opened. My own experiments are shown above. With more time and the right materials, one could produce something truly beautiful, such as the example below.
